On the square was the Tour BELLEGARDE built in the 15th century. In the Middle Ages, Aix was a stronghold. The BELLEGARDE Tower is then located within the ramparts surrounding the city. It is one of the many towers of the fortified town which numbered up to 39, "Bellegarde" meaning "Good guard". The tower’s geographic location allows guards to watch the arrival of intruders and warn the population of an enemy invasion.

Did you know ?

The original tower will be demolished for the first time in 1648 before being rebuilt, then definitively destroyed with all the ramparts in the 19th century. Today, the only part left is ... his name.

To see :

In the center of this square, sits a fountain with a Roman column. Work began in 1832 when the ramparts began to be destroyed. On the death of François Marius GRANET in 1849, the City, grateful for the donations of paintings that the painter had just given him, asked Hippolyte FERRAT to make a bust of Granet which will then be hoisted to the top of the column.
