Jean de LATTRE DE TASSIGNY est né le 2 février 1889 à Mouilleron-en-Pareds (Vendée), issu d’une famille noble.

Il étudie à la prestigieuse École militaire de Saint-Cyr et c’est avec le grade de capitaine qu’il participe à la Première Guerre mondiale où il sera blessé à quatre reprises.

Quand la Seconde Guerre mondiale éclate en 1939, il est promu général. Il s’oppose farouchement aux troupes allemandes sans pouvoir éviter la défaite. Lorsque le Maréchal PÉTAIN signe l’acte de capitulation, il part se réfugier dans la zone libre. Mais, lorsque cette même zone est envahie par les Allemands, il refuse l’ordre de ne pas combattre et est condamné à 10 ans de prison, le 9 janvier 1943. Bien qu'il soit hautement surveillé, il s’évade de prison le 3 septembre 1943 et rejoint le Général de GAULLE à Londres qui l’envoie en Algérie. Il est alors à la tête de l’Armée de la France libre qui débarque en Provence le 15 août 1944, en parallèle avec le débarquement de Normandie. Il libère Toulon, Marseille puis Aix le 21 août 1944. Il représente la France lors de la signature de la capitulation allemande le 8 mai 1945 à Berlin. De 1950 à sa mort, il sera le commandant en chef des troupes françaises en Indochine.

Malade, le Maréchal de LATTRE de TASSIGNY meurt de suites opératoires le 11 janvier 1952, à l’âge de 62 ans. C’est à titre posthume qu’il recevra ce titre.





Jean de LATTRE DE TASSIGNY was born on February 2, 1889 in Mouilleron-en-Pareds (Vendée), from a noble family.

He studied at the prestigious École Militaire de Saint-Cyr and it was with the rank of captain that he participated in the First World War, where he was wounded four times.

When World War II broke out in 1939, he was promoted to general. He fiercely opposed the German troops without being able to avoid defeat. When Marshal PÉTAIN signs the act of surrender, he takes refuge in the free zone. But, when this same area was invaded by the Germans, he refused the order not to fight and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on January 9, 1943. Although he was closely watched, he escaped from prison on January 9, 1943. September 3, 1943 and joined General de GAULLE in London who sent him to Algeria. He was then at the head of the Army of Free France which landed in Provence on August 15, 1944, in parallel with the Normandy landings. He liberated Toulon, Marseille then Aix on August 21, 1944. He represented France during the signing of the German surrender on May 8, 1945 in Berlin. From 1950 until his death, he was the commander-in-chief of French troops in Indochina.

Sick, Marshal de LATTRE de TASSIGNY died of operative consequences on January 11, 1952, at the age of 62. He will be awarded this title posthumously.
