Jean-Etienne PORTALIS est né au Bausset (Var) le 1er avril 1746.
Il obtient à la Faculté de droit d’Aix son diplôme d’avocat à l’âge de 19 ans. Il y exerce son métier avec passion pendant près de trente ans. Il gagnera même un procès contre le comte de MIRABEAU en prenant la défense de la femme de celui-ci. Vers la fin du XVIIIe siècle, il se rend à Paris où il est élu au « Conseil des Anciens » qui fait office de Sénat aujourd’hui. BONAPARTE le nomme alors membre du Conseil d’État et le charge de rédiger le Code civil en 1800.
Jean-Etienne PORTALIS meurt à Paris le 25 août 1807, à l’âge de 61 ans. BONAPARTE devenu NAPOLÉON 1er depuis le 2 décembre 1804, l’honorera en organisant des funérailles nationales et son inhumation au Panthéon à Paris.

Jean-Etienne PORTALIS was born in Bausset (Var) on April 1, 1746.
He graduated as a lawyer at the age of 19 at the Law Faculty of Aix. He practiced his profession there with passion for nearly thirty years. He even won a lawsuit against the count of MIRABEAU by defending the latter's wife. Towards the end of the 18th century, he went to Paris where he was elected to the "Council of Elders" which serves as the Senate today. BONAPARTE then appointed him a member of the Council of State and charged him with drafting the Civil Code in 1800.
Jean-Etienne PORTALIS died in Paris on August 25, 1807, at the age of 61. BONAPARTE, who became NAPOLEON I since December 2, 1804, honored him by organizing a state funeral and his burial in the Pantheon in Paris.
