Même si la rue qui porte son nom et où est situé son atelier n’est pas dans le centre-ville, il était impossible de passer sous silence l’Aixois le plus connu au monde.

Paul CEZANNE est né à Aix le 19 janvier 1839.

Sa famille possède une chapellerie sur le Cours MIRABEAU près de l’entrée du Passage AGARD. Son père créera ensuite la première banque d’Aix avec le futur maire Joseph CABASSOL. Le jeune Paul CEZANNE fréquente le Collège Bourbon, l’actuel Collège Mignet. C’est là qu’il se lie d’amitié avec Émile ZOLA. Quand en 1862, Paul CEZANNE se rend à Paris, il y rencontre PISSARRO et se lance dans la peinture sous sa tutelle. Alors qu’il est reconnu et apprécié pour son style artistique, ses œuvres sont régulièrement écartées par les autorités académiques. Cela ne le décourage pas, et il continue à peindre selon son propre style, que ce soit à Paris ou en Provence.

En 1869, il rencontre Hortense FIQUET, modèle d’art, avec qui il aura un fils en janvier 1872. De peur de perdre le soutien financier familial, il cache son existence à son père qui découvrira par hasard qu’il est grand-père quatre ans plus tard. Finalement, Paul et Hortense se marient en 1886 en l’église Saint-Jean-Baptiste du Faubourg sur le Cours SEXTIUS. Son père meurt la même année, lui laissant ses propriétés. Dans la foulée, Paul CEZANNE aurait mis un terme à son amitié avec Émile ZOLA, l’accusant de l’avoir décrit dans son roman « l’Œuvre » sous les traits de Claude LANTIER, peintre raté et suicidaire. Et ce n’est qu’en 1895 qu’un marchand de tableaux parisien expose plus de cent cinquante tableaux de CEZANNE ; celui-ci recueille, enfin, un certain succès. À Aix, il vit au 23 de la Rue BOULEGON et se rend chaque jour dans son atelier ou au pied de la montagne Sainte-Victoire. Les passants, qui le connaissent à peine, le décrivent comme un peintre timide et discret.

Paul CEZANNE meurt le 22 23 octobre 1906 à l’âge de 67 ans, deux jours après avoir contracté une pneumonie lorsqu’il fut surpris par un orage alors qu’il peignait dans la nature.

Paul CEZANNE a produit plus de trois cents peintures 900 peintures et 400 aquarelles et il est considéré comme le peintre de transition entre les impressionnistes du XIXe siècle et les cubistes du XXe siècle. Ce n’est qu’après sa mort qu’il connaîtra une véritable notoriété. Aujourd’hui, tous les plus grands musées au monde possèdent au moins une peinture de lui.
