Frédéric MISTRAL est né le 8 septembre 1830, à Maillane (Bouches-du-Rhône).

Après un baccalauréat obtenu à Nîmes, il entame des études de droit à Aix qu’il termine à l’âge de 21 ans.

Le 21 mai 1854, le jeune Frédéric MISTRAL âgé de 24 ans à peine, et six écrivains Provençaux fondent le « Félibrige ». C'est une association qui a pour but de défendre la culture provençale traditionnelle et de sauvegarder la langue d’Oc.

Outre son œuvre écrite en provençal, Frédéric Mistral est l’auteur d’un dictionnaire « Français Provençal ».

En 1904, âgé de 74 ans, il reçoit le prix Nobel de littérature.

En 1913, le président de la République française, Raymond POINCARÉ, le décore en personne de la Légion d’Honneur.

Frédéric MISTRAL meurt un an plus tard dans sa maison de Maillane le 25 mars 1914, à l’âge de 83 ans.

On May 21, 1854, the young Frédéric MISTRAL, barely 24 years old, and six Provençal writers founded the “Félibrige”. It is an association which aims to defend the traditional Provençal culture and to safeguard the language of Oc.

In addition to his work written in Provençal, Frédéric Mistral is the author of a "French Provençal" dictionary.

In 1904, aged 74, he received the Nobel Prize for Literature.

In 1913, the President of the French Republic, Raymond POINCARÉ, decorated him with the Legion of Honor.
