Gaston DE SAPORTA est né au Château de Montvert à Saint-Zacharie (Var) le 28 juillet 1823.

En 1846, il épouse Valentine de FORBIN. Mais le deuxième accouchement se passe mal et il perd mère et enfant. Pour surmonter son chagrin, il commence à s’intéresser à la botanique et tout particulièrement à celle du passé. Il étudie les plantes présentes aux périodes mésozoïque et tertiaire.

En 1854, il épouse une femme de la noblesse locale, Émilie GABRIELLI.

Ensuite, Gaston de SAPORTA deviendra assez rapidement un paléobotaniste respecté. Il était apprécié pour la qualité de ses méthodes de recherche, ses résultats et pour ses nombreuses découvertes scientifiques.

Durant les années 1860, ses recherches sur l’évolution de la flore et de la faune le conduisent à correspondre avec Charles DARWIN. Ils s’échangeront leurs théories sur l’évolution des espèces. Gaston de SAPORTA donnera beaucoup de conférences scientifiques à Paris et au-delà des frontières.

Il défendra la construction du musée d’Histoire naturelle d’Aix et lui fournira un grand nombre d’échantillons de son « herbarium » et de nombreux spécimens de plantes fossilisées.

En 1866, il devient membre de l’Académie des sciences d’Aix, dont il sera le président, à plusieurs reprises.

Gaston de SAPORTA fut reconnu pour ses travaux et sera membre d’une vingtaine d’organisations scientifiques, que ce soit en France ou à travers le monde. En 1873, il sera décoré de la Légion d’honneur pour l’ensemble de son œuvre scientifique.

Pendant plus de 40 ans, Gaston de SAPORTA ne cessera de publier le fruit de ses recherches dans des revues scientifiques. Mais, il écrivit aussi des articles destinés au grand public et portant tout spécialement sur le monde des plantes avant l’existence de l’homme. 

En 1893, Gaston de SAPORTA meurt à Aix le 26 janvier 1895, à l’âge de 74 ans.

Gaston DE SAPORTA was born at the Château de Montvert in Saint-Zacharie (Var) on July 28, 1823.

In 1846, he married Valentine de FORBIN. But the second childbirth goes badly and he loses mother and child. To overcome his grief, he began to take an interest in botany and especially that of the past. He studies the plants present in the Mesozoic and Tertiary periods.

In 1854, he married a woman of the local nobility, Émilie GABRIELLI.

Then, Gaston de SAPORTA will quickly become a respected paleobotanist. He was appreciated for the quality of his research methods, his results and for his many scientific discoveries.

During the 1860s, his research on the evolution of flora and fauna led him to correspond with Charles DARWIN. They will share their theories on the evolution of species. Gaston de SAPORTA will give many scientific conferences in Paris and beyond the borders.

He will defend the construction of the Aix Natural History Museum and provide it with a large number of samples from its "herbarium" and numerous specimens of fossilized plants.

In 1866, he became a member of the Aix Academy of Sciences, of which he was president, on several occasions.

Gaston de SAPORTA was recognized for his work and will be a member of around twenty scientific organizations, whether in France or around the world. In 1873, he was decorated with the Legion of Honor for all of his scientific work.

For more than 40 years, Gaston de SAPORTA will not stop publishing the results of his research in scientific journals. But, he also wrote articles intended for the general public and dealing especially with the world of plants before the existence of man.

In 1893, Gaston de SAPORTA died in Aix on January 26, 1895, at the age of 74.
